Re: GC's games have been moved
If GW complained or not is not the problem. Who cares if they complained. The problem is GC has the right to choose where to play and were denied that right. The arrogant and unfair practices of the VHSL are to blame.
Gezzzzzzz, it is too easy to post on this board now that you have to login to view it.
Re: GC's games have been moved
So GC is playing both games a Virginia High. Not the players choice, but does the VHSL care about that? No way! These kids are the winners of Region D, but did not get to choose where to play the state quarterfinals, the VHSL made the choice for them. I hope the kids, both the boys and the girls, will show they are true champions and win both games. Oh by the way, tickets are on sale at the GCHS office. Re: GC's games have been moved
I doubt the VHSL moved the games for them.
Umm since the Region D tourney ther has been talk of moving the game from Castlwodd to Virginia High becuz that is where the girls wanted to play.
The decision was more than likely made by the teams coaches and the school. The VHSL cannot determine where you play your game as long as it is a neutral site.
And the reason the Floyyd county J.J Kelly game was postponed was becuz of a death in the family of the Floyyd County head coach, so it was moved back to SAt.
Re: GC's games have been moved
I guess you missed this earlier in the thread:
GROUP A STATE QUARTERFINAL BASKETBALL SITE AND DATE CHANGES
Accommodations made in anticipation of large crowds
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Joyce Sisson,
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA ? The Group A girls and boys basketball quarterfinal match-ups originally scheduled to take place at Castlewood High School on Saturday March 3 at 2:00 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. will instead take place at Virginia High School, game day and time unchanged. For the girls game, Gate City will play Radford and for the boys game, Gate City will play George Wythe.
High pre-game ticket sales prompted VHSL Assistant Director Joyce Sisson to make this change. "With a 2,500 seat gymnasium, Virginia is better equipped to handle the number of spectators that are expected to attend."
Re: GC's games have been moved
MONEY! thats the only reason the VHSL moved the game. They thought that GW and Radford would bring more fans if they just had to travel 81. VA High gets no money except for consecsions, the rest goes straight to the VHSL.

Heck as soon as GC wins its first Region title in 8 or 9 years, everybody starts complaining and whinning. Why is everybody against GC, they have done nothing but win, so respect them. Twin springs got to pick and so did twin valley, no question there. Give GC a break people. GC wins = pissed off people.

Who is complaining about GC? I am just wanting solid proof that GW is whining. And I too think we should choose where we want to play. I think we should play it at GC because we earned the right to host it. Just sell the tickets to capacity of our gym and who dont get it then tough luck.
Re: GC's games have been moved
You can't host state basketball quarterfinals at your home venue, no one in the state is allowed to do so. I do agree that Gate City should be allowed to host where they wish to do so, as long as that gym has been accredited for regional/quarterfinal usage - which Castlewood is and has been. Twin Springs played George Wythe at Castlewood in 2004, and we all know what a big crowd the Red Army brings to their basketball games, especially on the state level. If Castlewood was large enough to handle that matchup, it would be no problem to handle Saturday's crowd in attendance.
I have no doubts whatsoever that Castlewood would have been acceptable in seating capacity. I also agree with others that it was moved by the VHSL on the request of one of the visting schools for whatever reason. Ms. Sisson's press statement just leads one to believe that even more, given her reasoning for doing so. Since the girls game is first and knowing the Radford athletic department representatives, I can guarantee it wasn't by their request. Also, given the information from GC1 - which happens to be a very reliable source from my understanding when it comes to GC basketball and Coach Vermillion - I don't think he's lying or fabricating the truth with what he has said about who was trying to have the venue moved and when that request was first mentioned.
Bottom line, good luck to the Lady Indians and Lady Devils, as well as the Devils of Castlewood & Gate City. Represent our Region well!
Re: GC's games have been moved
Thank you redrain. Trust me that the GW coach has been trying to get the venue changed since it was announced Monday. And the Gate City coaches had NOTHING to do with it being changed. Coach V fought tooth and nail to keep it at CW with GC even offering to split the game nights and was told the decision had been made by the VH$L. Very unfair to the Coaches and players who have worked their tails off and played their hearts out for the RIGHT, yes right, to play at the venue of their choice.
I myself was told yesterday by the VH$L that Castlewood was too small to host a State game and I kindly reminded the lady it was plenty big enough year before last and she sorta stuttered and said she had no answer to my question. Then I politely reminded her that Clinchco, which if I'm not mistaken is smaller than CW's gym, was an acceptable place last year. Still she had no reasonable response!
But it's been decided by the almighty VH$L and I can assure you win or lose there will be a fired up bunch of Blue Devils take the floor in Bristol Saturday afternoon beginning at 2 and for the next 4 or so hours everything they have will be left on the court. So just make the nice drive to Bristol and cheer these young men and women on as they seek a victory in the face of injustice.
Re: GC's games have been moved
For this reason I hope GC stomps a mudhole in GW and then proceeds to walk it dry.
Re: GC's games have been moved
Coach Vermillion did fight tooth and nail to have the boys game played where the kids wanted to play. He is an exceptional coach and on top of that a really nice guy. Both GC teams need all the fans they can get in Bristol Saturday afternoon to show support for a bunch of kids who deserved better. BE THERE AND GO BLUE AND LADY BLUE!
